On Sunday 22nd September 2024, the FA attended a session at Sunderland City Juniors as they were crowned England Football Comets Session of the Season for 2023/2024.

Those who nominated the club for Session of the Season had the following to say about the sessions:

“My son goes here and absolutely loves it. Dave is fabulous with the kids and it’s great to have a session that includes children with additional needs. He goes above and beyond for the kids, all the kids love him. He caters to every child’s needs as they are all different.”

“The Comets sessions have brought out a confidence in my son and daughter that they previously didn't have. I have seen them flourish while taking part and has improved their social and communication skills working as part of a team and have made good friends in the process.”

“The coach Dave has such a fantastic presence with the kids and has taken time to get to know each one to facilitate their individual needs. It’s such an amazing session that the kids cannot wait to attend each week.”

“David has created an amazing space by running Comets session where every child has fun and learns valuable life skills e.g. sharing, taking turns, and making friends which are transferable into daily life. Many of the children have even passed SEN targets since starting Comets that they had previously struggled to meet.”

“I didn't believe my daughter would ever be able to join in a football session. David makes it inclusive and ensures she can participate in every session fully but at her own pace.”

The club's success over the last 12 months has been testament to all the hard work and dedication from all involved in setting up the session. The club have now created a new U12's Pan Disability team who are involved in the DCFA Junior Ability Counts League which takes place on a monthly basis.
